Ok, I think I had the wrong logging level, I am now using
# Default global logging level.
# Loggers and Handlers may override this level
.level=FINEST

Will keep posted on what I find now in the logs. Hopefully I can see what Neo4J is doing now.

So I think it is Neo4j transaction rollovers.

See below, so lets say at around 3:11:20 the neo4j server rest calls began timing out after loading around 3300 nodes with index entries. Below I see new log file created after 5 minutes (+- the time after the unresponsive rest calls for my cpu to go to idle), so it seems for those 5 minutes after unresponsive behaviour that a new log file is made.

Notice the following files after 3:11 that were created, and I guess the flush caused too much load for the rest api to be responsive.

I have set the Logging level to DEBUG and this is the log, as I need to find out what Neo4j is doing when it starts timing out on rest calls. Any advice on how I can get better info will be great as the default logging =DEBUG is not good enough.
i.e.

The from 3:11:20 to 3:15:00 the Neo4j server was busy utilisation allot of processing power, roughly 25% per core (8 cores) for around 5 minutes, after which the neo4j server started to idle again.

I am currently loading tens of thousands of nodes with full text index entries into neo4J.

Facts:

*         It runs smoothly until around the 3500 - 4500 node range

*         Garbage Collection has been optimised by increasing heap size from 3-64MB to 1024-2048MB

*         All node creations and index creations are REST calls.

*         +- 12 Active HTTP Connections to the Neo4JServer

Below is the garbage collection logs, the first when the default heap size was used, and the second with the 1024-2048Mb heap size. So this proves that GC is now working much better.

I think the problem is that Neo4J is perhaps needing to FLUSH/Truncate/Roll over the log file at around the 3500-4500 node creation, and then at that point, we get REST Timeout exceptions.


1.       What advice can you provide to optimise this?

2.       Is this expected behaviour? I.e. should I increase the web timeout for rest calls, if so, what should it be when under high load? E.g. 30 seconds, 60 seconds?

3.       If this has to do with Neo4J flushing transaction logs etc, what can we do to minimise impact on rest calls?

4.       What logging can I configure to get the exact details of what Neo4j is doing at the time we get web exceptions


Below we see a definite benefit with larger heap as less GC calls are made, but this does not solve the timeout issues when Neo4J needs to do something to flush
